EXCLUSIVE: Comedian and actress Jiaoying Summers is set to premiere her first hour comedy special What Specie Are You?, produced by Comedy Dynamics, exclusively on Hulu on November 8.
Named this year as one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch, Summers’ special sees her dissect what makes us different and what brings us together. Drawing from her life as a Chinese American and first-generation immigrant, she tackles topics like cultural clashes, immigrant identity and motherhood, among others.
“Jiaoying is one of those naturally hilarious comedians that thrives on the biggest stages,” said Comedy Dynamics CEO Brian Volk-Weiss. “Hulu is the perfect launch pad for her debut comedy special.”
In addition to writing and performing, Summers exec produced the special alongside Volk-Weiss, Cisco Henson and her manager Carolyn Gitomer. Samuel Brownfield directed the hour.
An Asian Hall of Fame inductee who recently became the first Chinese comedian to headline the Apollo Theater during the New York Comedy Festival, Summers has over four million followers and more than a billion views across social platforms. Known for her “Uber Karen” sketch, as well as her irreverent takes on English names, whose meaning she roasts in Chinese, she hosts her own podcast, Tiger Mom, and tours to sold-out crowds across the globe. The former Miss China also owns and operates The Hollywood Comedy and The Pasadena Comedy clubs, as spaces highlighting diverse and underrepresented talent.
