“That was so fun,” says the late One Direction star at the end of the clip
Liam Payne seemed to be having a lot of fun while filming Building the Band. On Tuesday, ahead of the release of the show’s final three episodes, Netflix shared a video of Payne dancing to “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction with fans in the crowd.
The video shows Payne — in a peach-pink suit — singing along to the 1D classic as Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland bopped their heads nearby. He made his way through the crowd, interacting with fans and soaking in the moment. Before the clip starts, a message flashes on screen: “In loving memory of Liam Payne.”
At the end of the video, Payne adds, “That was so fun.”
Payne served as a judge on the Netflix competition show, which follows music contestants as they form boy bands, girl groups, and a mixed group in hopes of winning $500,000. In the final half of the show, Payne offered guidance and feedback to the groups as they navigate their journeys. Netflix is set to release the final three episodes on Wednesday.
When the first few episodes of the show aired, Netflix included a tribute to Payne at the beginning of the first episode. “When we came together to film Building the Band, we never imagined we’d soon be saying goodbye to our friend Liam Payne,” AJ McLean said at the beginning of the episode. “Liam is a guest judge in later episodes, and through his presence, we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice. It’s through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family.”
For a Rolling Stone investigation into the singer’s death earlier this year, McLean shared that he “immediately connected” with Payne on “not only a music level but a human level.” They spent hours together for weeks at a time while filming the show. “We both were living a parallel life,” he said. “There was a lot of funny boy-band jabs that we would take at each other. He really had a quick wit to him — that nice, dry, British humor.”
