One of the Caribbean’s most established island hot spots, Belize’s Ambergris Caye offers retirees modern comforts, an English-speaking community, and a depth of history that reflects its long-standing appeal. Simply put: it’s a place where vibrant town life and easy access to natural beauty coexist.
And it happens to be one of the most affordable Caribbean islands to live on, according to International Living Magazine.
The bustling island sits just below the Yucatán Peninsula and right off the Belize Barrier Reef, making daily access to snorkeling and diving well within reach.
San Pedro, the island’s only town, has evolved from a quiet fishing village into a lively commercial hub with about 20,000 residents on the island, according to International Living. The town is anchored by luxury beachfront properties, resorts, and boutique inns.
Despite its growing popularity, well-established infrastructure, reliable access to transportation by water taxi or golf cart, and a small airport offering quick flights to the mainland, Ambergris Caye remains affordable compared to other Caribbean mainstays.
A couple can live nicely for between $2,950 and $3,150 a month, including rent, International Living noted. And homeowners on the island often spend closer to $2,000 per month.

The colorful Caribbean getaway, however, does come at a higher cost by local standards. Housing is the biggest expense, with many of the best rental and purchase opportunities still circulating through word of mouth, according to Live and Invest Overseas.
Finding the right place also means understanding how people get around with many residents relying on golf carts or bicycles. And when it comes time to settle in, local artisans can craft custom furniture from Belizean hardwoods like mahogany and poisonwood, often at prices comparable to factory-made in the United States, Live and Invest Overseas noted.
Food costs vary, but local staples help keep expenses manageable. Fresh fish is commonly sold straight from the dock for about $3.50 per pound, while street vendors offer satisfying meals for around $5. A household of two can spend around $400 per month on groceries, though sticking to local brands and seasonal foods can bring that closer to $250.
Health care is available on the island, with doctor visits typically costing around $20 to $30 and many practitioners trained internationally. However, residents who need more specialized testing will have to head to Belize City.
Beyond Ambergris Caye, Belize offers a diverse array of experiences to explore from ancient Mayan archaeological sites to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Belize Barrier Reef, incredible all-inclusive hotels, and more.
