    • Port Aransas, aka the “Fishing Capital of Texas,” has 18 miles of white-sand beaches and abundant Gulf Coast fishing.
    • This laid-back Mustang Island town is known for its drive-on beaches, family-friendly vibes, birdwatching, and a walkable marina near downtown.
    • While here, visitors can bring their fresh catch to local restaurants to be cooked, enjoy unfussy beach bars, and stay in charming historic inns.

Texas’ Gulf Coast is peppered with dozens of cute beach towns, from Galveston down to South Padre Island, each with its own personality—but there’s one that stands out from the rest.

Located on Mustang Island, about 40 miles north of Corpus Christi, Texas, is the small beach town of Port Aransas. Recently designated the “Fishing Capital of Texas” in 2025, Port Aransas is known for its sugary white sand beaches (there are 18 miles of them) and its bay waters, which are packed with redfish, black drum, flounder, and mahi-mahi. The vibe here is decidedly salty, family-friendly, and refreshingly unfussy. You can reel in redfish at sunrise, bar-hop in flip-flops at sunset—and cap off the day by bringing your catch to a local restaurant to have it cooked for you.

Sure, there are larger beach cities along the coast. But Port A is where you go when you want a seaside escape without the pretense. It’s earned a devoted following among Texans in the know as the state’s true getaway beach town, thanks in large part to its size. It’s compact enough that the marina sits steps from downtown—walking is the go-to method of transportation, and sunset feels like a community ritual.

Here’s what you need to know before planning a trip to Port Aransas, Texas.

    Best Things to Do

Port Aransas’ beaches provide 18 miles of sandy opportunity—visitors can be seen swimming, parasailing, kiteboarding, fishing, paddleboarding, or catching a wave with their pup, as the area is dog-friendly. In true Texas fashion, you are allowed to drive on the Port Aransas beaches as well, as long as you pay for a beach parking permit and drive under the speed limit of 15 miles per hour.

“We try to be a very approachable beach,” says Lauren Dury, a representative of the Port Aransas Tourism Bureau & Chamber of Commerce. “Like most Texas beaches, you can just drive right up to the shore, but we really pride ourselves on not being pretentious. We want to be family-friendly and fun.”

In addition to sandy fun and fishing, Port Aransas is also a popular destination among destination lovers. Mustang Island is a popular winter migratory destination with American White Pelicans, Marsh Wrens, and the famed endangered Whooping Crane. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the Whooping Crane Festival, which celebrates the birds’ arrival on the Texas coast each season.

“We’re on a really cool migratory flyway,” Dury says. “We get to see these rare birds come to us for the winter every year.”

The town itself is a charmer. Stop by Sea Shells by Sea Shore for souvenirs and sea shells, and Raggdoll Boutique for cute, coastal-inspired dresses. To experience Port Aransas’ creative side firsthand, visit during its “Bollard Buddies” festival, which takes place each winter. During the event, 500 knitted and crocheted creations are affixed to wharf and beach posts. Residents and visitors alike contribute designs, bringing pops of color and whimsy to the quiet winter months before spring.

    Where to Eat and Drink

Don’t feel like dealing with your fresh catch after a day on the water? Several Port Aransas restaurants will happily cook your fish for you. With advance notice, Fins Grill & Icehouse, Virginia’s on the Bay, and Trout Street Bar & Grill are all known for accommodating guests who bring in freshly caught fish. Just be sure to call ahead to confirm availability.

If you’re searching for a bona fide beach bar that looks as though it was lifted straight from the set of “Donovan’s Reef,” Lelo’s Island Bar fits the bill. This laid-back favorite isn’t trying to impress with white tablecloths—beachgoers come for big, juicy burgers, salty French fries, and playful tiki-style cocktails. Standouts include the ice-cold Scurvy (made with two types of rum), the Hawaii Five-O, and tropical classics like rum punch, frozen hurricanes, and Mai Tais.

For families, BlueWater Cowboy Saloon & Mercantile has three stories of food and fun for kids and adults alike. The first floor opens to the ocean and has outdoor games for children alongside a full bar for adults—there’s also live music on select evenings and during peak seasons. Head to the second floor for a quieter atmosphere or a seat at the sushi bar, where chefs prepare made-to-order rolls. The third floor is all about atmosphere, with a bar designed to resemble the back of a boat—and the only bottom-filling beer draft system in Port Aransas. Menu-wise, there’s something for everyone, from signature sushi rolls to coastal favorites like tuna burgers, tacos, lobster pasta, and more.

Enjoy true surf and turf at Tortuga’s Saltwater Grill—there’s steak and seafood combos, fresh oysters, pastas, clams, and even a wine club. For arguably some of the best Italian food in the Lone Star State (and definitely on the coast), head to the Venetian Hot Plate, a cozy little spot owned by Venetian natives Linda and Maurice Halioua, where you can feast on seafood linguine and garlic butter shrimp.

    Where to Stay

Given its status as a laidback beach town, Port Aransas has a limited number of hotels and rentals for booking that fill up fast during busy seasons like spring break. If you want an all-around experience for your stay with a kitchen, pool, bedroom, bathroom, and ocean views, check out The Mayan Princess, which has direct beach access. For those opting for a more traditional hotel experience, the Hampton Inn & Suites Port Aransas is located about a five to 10-minute drive from the beach. For a historic stay with character, consider The Tarpon Inn, which was built in 1886 and has charming Key West-style architecture. It’s hosted guests such as Clyde Beatty and Hedy Lamar—the on-site restaurant, Roosevelt’s, is worth a visit, too. Finally, there’s the Hotel Lydia, an affordable boutique property located within a five-minute walk of the Port Aransas marina.
