    TL;DR

    • Marvel is returning to the fighting game genre with Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
    • The game features a unique 4v4 tag-team battle system, different from the usual 2v2 or 3v3 tag fighters.
    • Developed by Arc System Works, PlayStation Studios, and Marvel Games, it combines Marvel characters with Japanese anime-inspired visuals.
    • So far, 8 characters have been revealed: Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), Storm, Doctor Doom, Captain America, and Iron Man.
    • Gameplay is accessible despite being a 4v4 game with both simple inputs and traditional fighting mechanics.

Marvel characters are set to re-enter the fighting game genre with the upcoming Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls release. You might have heard of 2v2 or 3v3 tag-team fighting games, but Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is taking it a step ahead with a genre-defining 4v4 tag-team system.

Marvel has a rich history of exciting video games, utilising recognisable characters from its huge universe. However, Marvel Tōkon is being developed in partnership with PlayStation Studios, Marvel Games, and Arc System Works, a Japanese-based developer known for games like Dragon Ball FighterZ. Therefore, Marvel Tōkon’s characters won’t just be familiar but also have a unique anime-like visual, with a distinct Japanese design.

Set to arrive in 2026 on PS5 and PC as a 4v4 tag-team fighting game, the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls roster is undoubtedly going to have a huge number of heroes. For now, though, only a few have been confirmed, which were showcased along with the game’s announcement at Sony’s State of Play event.

Therefore, here is the full list of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls characters.

All Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls characters revealed so far

The game’s announcement at Sony’s State of Play event revealed 8 characters, allowing gameplay to be showcased in a 4v4 tag-team match. The complete list is as follows:

    • Ms. Marvel
    • Spider-Man
    • Star-Lord
    • Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes)
    • Storm
    • Doctor Doom
    • Captain America
    • Iron Man

The Marvel Tōkon developer has said that the game is still in production, and will keep getting new characters and other additional content too.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls roster in detail

The reveal only showed us a glimpse of what to expect from the overall game. It offered an insight into what the Marvel Tōkon characters would look like, along with their abilities.

The game’s trailer on the Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel says that it is being made “from Japan to the world.”

This can be seen in the in-game visuals. Characters conserve the original look from the comics but have an added Japanese layer, almost looking similar to an anime fighting game, but make it Marvel.

Kamala will be present in Marvel Tōkon with familiar abilities, as she can be seen smashing Spider-Man in the trailer by enlarging her hands.

    Spider-Man

Any Marvel game would be incomplete without the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. He takes on a much of a buffer look in Marvel Tōkon, with hints of white on his suit as well.

    Star-Lord

The leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy appears in Marvel Tōkon with his mask up, equipped with his signature blaster and lots of explosives.

    Ghost Rider

Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider will be in the game too and can even be seen behind the wheel in the trailer. On the battlefield, he makes use of chains to overpower the enemy.

    Storm

An X-Men member is also a part of the game’s initial roster. Storm will bring her psionic abilities to Marvel Tōkon.

    Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom’s abilities are on full display in the gameplay trailer, as he emits a green ray of energy at his opponents.

    Captain America

    Iron Man

Iron Man was a talking point in the trailer as an example of the Japanese influence on the game. His look conserves the original suit from the MCU and comics, along with anime-mech style elements on top. Iron Man also transforms into the Hulk Buster in the trailer.

Who is developing Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls?

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is being developed by Arc System Works, PlayStation Studios, and Marvel Games. In the trailer, Takeshi Yamanaka, producer for the game from Arc System Works, said that the development journey began as PlayStation reached out to them asking if they wanted to create a Marvel fighting game.

Arc System Works, founded back in January 1988, is a major Japanese game developer and publisher, known for its fighting games. Perhaps the most iconic is 2018’s Dragon Ball FighterZ, which was a 3v3 tag-team fighting game. It’s also well-known for the Guilty Gear series, with Strive being a highlight among the FGC.

With Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, it is taking things to the next level, bringing four characters per team. With a vision of ‘from Japan to the world,’ the Marvel characters feature a fresh and unique look.

“When they named the developer [Arc System Works], that really perked up our ears,” said Michael Francisco, Sr. Product Development Manager at Marvel Games. “It’s always refreshing to work with a team that will take on the challenge of tackling Marvel, putting their own spin on it, and just uppercutting that challenge into the stratosphere. And that’s what you get with this team. They couldn’t make something boring if they tried.”

What to expect from Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls?

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls appears to be set in New York, and the trailer showed three different stages of the city. Each stage in the game will also feature multiple areas, allowing you to fight on different grounds during a match.

One of the stages has an Earth’s mightiest heroes statue, which features Thor, while another has the Fantastic Four building in the background, perhaps hinting towards the next characters players can expect in the game.

When it comes to the actual Marvel Tōkon gameplay, a 4vs4 team battle format is something unique. However, the developers acknowledged that this doesn’t mean you have to master at least four characters to be good at the game. The basic mechanics have been designed in such a way that players can perform many actions with either traditional fighting game inputs or simple inputs.

Each character will have a set of Normal, Special, and Unique attacks along with a cinematic Ultimate Skill. All of these are inspired by the actual Marvel lore.

Additionally, Marvel Games has said that Arc System has designed a system that ‘adapts’ to your playstyle. It’s unclear what this means exactly at this time.

    Conclusion

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, developed by PlayStation Studios, Marvel Games, and Arc System Works, is offering something new with its 4v4 tag-team system-based fighting game. Arc System, based in Japan and renowned for making fighting games, is blending Marvel’s iconic characters with anime-inspired visuals, which can be seen with the mech-like Iron Man suit. Only eight characters have been revealed so far, but many more are on the way as the game gears up for a 2026 release on PC and PS5. The developers have promised that the 4v4 mechanics won’t be too much for players to handle, as it will have adaptable gameplay and simple core mechanics.
