Ritwik Bhowmik is making the jump from streaming to cinemas with “Abhootpurva,” a romantic horror-comedy that will serve as the “Bandish Bandits” star’s maiden theatrical outing.
The genre-hybrid project hails from producer Khyati Madaan’s Not Out Entertainment, with Sumit Kumar Mishra also producing. Lensing is expected to commence in November.
The story unfolds in Agra during the 1990s, weaving together romantic elements with comedic beats and supernatural scares. Madaan’s production aims to capture the era’s charm while incorporating the famous monument as more than mere scenery — the Taj Mahal functions as an integral story component in the leads’ romantic journey. Period-appropriate musical elements will help establish the nostalgic atmosphere.
Bhowmik gained industry recognition through his lead performance in the Prime Video music drama “Bandish Bandits.” His subsequent streaming work includes roles in “The Whistleblower,” “Modern Love Mumbai” and “Maja Ma.”
This represents the second major title reveal from Not Out Entertainment this year, following news of an Ahan Shetty-led horror project that the company bills as an Indian feature drawing inspiration from a national tragedy.
“‘Abhootpurva’ is a film very close to my heart,” said producer Madaan. “It’s set in 90s Agra, where love felt pure, simple, and yet larger than life. With romance, humor, nostalgia, and a touch of the supernatural, this film is designed as a true big-screen experience. Having Ritwik make his theatrical debut with us makes it even more special, and the ensemble we’re about to announce will surprise everyone.”
Before launching her production venture, Madaan worked in senior roles across several prominent Indian entertainment companies, including stints at Red Chillies Entertainment, Disney India and Maddock Films. Her current development pipeline features projects spanning multiple genres, including a character-driven drama from Habib Faisal, the filmmaker behind “Do Dooni Chaar” and “Ishaqzaade.”
