Attributes determine the stats of your party members in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The most important thing you need to know about attributes is this: They make number go up.

In this Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 guide, we’ll explain all of the attributes in the game, plus offer some advice on the best attributes to level up for each character.

There are five attributes in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. They broadly affect the following stats:

    • Vitality: Health, how much HP that character has
    • Might: Attack power, or how much damage that character deals
    • Agility: Speed, or how frequently that character gets to attack in the battle rotation
    • Defense: Defense, or how much damage reduction that character has
    • Luck: Critical rate, or how frequently that character lands critical hits

That said, depending on the character’s weapon, certain attributes affect additional stats. For instance, assigning Sciel’s attribute points toward her Vitality will increase her health, but if she’s using a weapon that scales with Vitality, her attack power will also increase.

Upon leveling up, each character will earn three attribute points. Each attribute point can increase the level of one attribute by one, and you can apply these points at expedition flags (seen above).

In general, you want to prioritize attributes that match a character’s weapon scaling, though there are some helpful guidelines for how to spend your points in each act.

    • In Act 1, recoats, the item that lets you respec your stats, aren’t widely available, so it’s best to find a weapon that suits your playstle and stick with it for the time being. As you level up, you’ll want to spend points on whatever attributes the weapon scales with, but don’t disregard Might, Vitality, and Defense either as they’re important in the early game as you’re getting used to dodging and parrying. Try to hold onto your recoats in Act 1 as you’ll obtain more weapons, Pictos, and Lumina to experiment with in Act 2 and 3.
    • In Act 2, keep prioritizing your weapon attributes, but get your other stats to at least 20 or 25 as well. Attributes that your weapon doesn’t scale with, including Might, stop having as much influence over stat increases past 25 and drop off much more sharply after 30, so it’s not worth investing in them beyond those points.
    • In Act 3, you have two choices. You can respec and put every available skill point in the stats your weapon scales with, once you find a weapon with A- and S-rank attribute scaling that you like. At max level, that’d be 99 points in two stats and none in any other, even Might, which is a bit risky if Vitality and Defense aren’t your weapon’s stats. Or you can be more balanced, with 40 or so in your two weapon attributes and 30-ish in the rest.

If you really want to get in the weeds, check out our build guides for Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Monoco, and Verso.

You can reset a character’s attributes with a Recoat, a rare item earned from some boss fights, merchants (they cost 10,000 chroma), and Picture Cages (those chest-like puzzles in levels where you have to find three nearby locks to open). Given how rare they are, though, we’d recommend saving them until you’ve accrued enough weapons and unlocked enough skills to really get into the weeds of min-maxing.

Characters level up quickly in Expedition 33 anyway, so if you don’t like the way one party member’s stats are shaping up, you’ll get plenty of additional attribute points to readjust.
