EXCLUSIVE: David Duchovny (The X-Files) has co-written and will star opposite Laverne Cox (Clean Slate) in Soapbox, a satirical comedy following an aging soap opera star who finds himself caught in the absurdities of today’s culture wars.
Further details as to the plot are being kept under wraps. Andrew Jay Cohen, a multi-hyphenate best known for his screenwriting on the Neighbors films and the comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, is directing from a script penned by Duchovny and Palm Springs helmer Max Barbakow.
Others in the cast include West Duchovny (Painkiller), Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), and Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing). Production kicked off in Los Angeles earlier this month.
Soapbox is an Astute Films production in association with Rookie, Inc. Fred Bernstein, David Duchovny, Tiffany Kuzon, Jeff David, Barbakow and Cohen are producing, with Cox serving as executive producer.
A Golden Globe winner and four-time Emmy nominee known for starring roles in the series The X-Files and Californication, David Duchovny will next be seen starring in Jay Duplass’ Adam Cayton-Holland dramedy See You When I See You, which premiered at Sundance and is headed to SXSW next. As a filmmaker, he has recently written, directed and produced Reverse the Curse, an adaptation of his novel Bucky F*cking Dent. He is repped by Anonymous Content and CAA.
Also a four-time Emmy nominee, Cox is known for starring in Netflix’s prestige series Orange Is the New Black and Inventing Anna, as well as Prime Video’s Clean Slate. In film, her credits include Promising Young Woman, Bad Hair, Grandma, and Jonah Hill’s upcoming Apple pic Outcome, to name a few. She is repped by CAA and PH Entertainment Group.
West Duchovny is repped by Gersh and Untitled; Park by UTA and Artists First; Simpson by CAA and Cognition Artists; Grey by Untitled; Cohen by Aaron Brown at Curate; and Barbakow by CAA and Range Media.
