A Disney World Hollywood Studios employee was struck by a prop boulder during a showing of the “Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!” stage show after the 400-pound rubber sphere became displaced from its track.
In a video of the accident shared on social media, the boulder bounces off its designated path and onto the stage. A staff member rushes in to stop the boulder before it makes contact with the audience, but the impact of the prop is too strong, and it knocks him over. Another cast member quickly rushes in to help before the video cuts off.
Variety has reached out to Disney for comment on the incident.
The “Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!” is part of the Discovery Disney event series, which includes “educational backstage tours and sessions just for participants on the program to learn more about how our parks and resorts create magic for guests,” according to the Disney Parks Blog.
The “Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!” show is based on scenes from the Steven Spielberg-directed 1981 film “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” starring Harrison Ford as the title character. Other than the boulder, the stunt show at Disney World also features a bullwhip demonstration and falls from tall buildings, as well as stunts with axe-swinging stone soldiers and punji stick pressure plates. According to the show’s official description, there are dozens of “contingencies” for the performers if things go wrong. The first scene alone, which features only the Indiana Jones performer, has 12 possible backups.
