Whether you’re gaming, streaming movies, or taking work meetings, having your WiFi suddenly cut out can be frustrating — at best. Simply put, not all internet connections are created equal. From fiber to 5G, there are a lot of options to ensure a stable connection. The best option can depend on factors like where you live, how many people are in your household, and what you use your internet for. Here’s what you need to know about the different ways of getting home internet.

    DSL and Cable

Like dial-up, DSL relies on telephone lines to connect you to the internet. DSL is a more affordable option, but speeds are more limited. Unlike dial-up, you can still use a landline phone while using DSL.

Cable internet, on the other hand, utilizes the same coaxial lines from cable TV and is often sold as a bundle with cable TV. Cable internet is widely available, relatively affordable, and fast enough for many users. Cable download speeds can be fast, although upload speeds are more limited.

    5G Internet

5G internet is wireless and uses the same kind of cellular connection as a phone’s data plan. A receiver turns that data signal into Wi-Fi that the devices in your home can use. T-Mobile 5G Home Internet, one of the leading options, doesn’t include monthly equipment fees or annual contracts. The 5G Gateway device is included and arrives with free two-day shipping. Because it’s wireless, T-Mobile 5G Home Internet can be set up yourself, without waiting for a technician. T-Mobile’s 5G Home Internet plans start at $35/mo. with AutoPay and a voice line.

    Fiber Internet

Because it uses fiber-optic cables, fiber internet is the fastest and most reliable kind of internet available. It’s less susceptible to reliability issues, and it delivers blazing-fast speeds, including during peak usage times. Fiber is also capable of delivering fast upload speeds, making it a good option if, for example, you’re a content creator who regularly uploads large files.

The major catch with fiber is its limited availability. Because fiber internet requires infrastructure to be built, it will take time for it to gain widespread adoption. If it is available in your area, though, it’s a great option.

T-Mobile Fiber Home Internet starts at $55/mo. with Fiber AutoPay and a voice line, plus taxes/fees. For two gig speed, plans start at $85/mo. with Fiber AutoPay and a voice line, plus taxes/fees. Plus, your price is guaranteed for five years; exclusions like taxes & fees apply.

    5G vs. Fiber

Whether you choose 5G or fiber comes down to factors like your needs, budget, and where you live. Because fiber is not available everywhere, it won’t be an option for every consumer. It’s also pricier than 5G internet. That said, fiber is faster and more stable, with gigabit speeds and fast uploads. 5G, on the other hand, is a good option for those looking to skip the hassle of a complicated install. Both T-Mobile internet options include equipment, and there are no annual contracts.
