Living in California certainly has its perks. The weather is almost always perfect, the mountains are endlessly inviting, and state’s inland gems, like the ever-popular Palm Springs, offer plenty of magic for weekend wanderers. But for Californians who love to travel (my former self included) there’s one common gripe: getting to the gorgeous Caribbean islands takes the better part of a day—10 hours at best. Fortunately, there is one way to get that tropical feeling without ever stepping on a plane. Just head to Catalina Island instead.

Located just an hour’s ferry ride off the Southern California coast, Catalina has earned a reputation as the “Caribbean of California” thanks to its bluer-than-blue water, charming beachside resorts, laid-back coastal vibe, and fantastic dining. The island spans a sizable 76 square miles, but the real star here is Avalon Bay, the island’s main harbor shaped like a perfect crescent.

On calm days, you can stand at the edge of the pier and see straight down through the clear water to the kelp beds below, where bright fish weave between strands of swaying seaweed. Of course, you’re welcome to jump in too—especially at Avalon’s public beaches: South Beach, Middle Beach, and Step Beach, all perfect for a refreshing dip.

For a little more adventure, book a kayaking tour with Descanso Beach Ocean Sports to paddle along the coast and spot even more marine life. You’re likely to catch a glimpse of the vibrant orange Garibaldi, Catalina’s signature fish, as well as curious sea lions that might pop up to say hello.

Catalina’s famous glass-bottom boat tours are a rite of passage for any visitor. The boats offer a low-effort way to spy on some of the coolest marine life in the region, including bat rays and even the occasional shark. The boats leave right from Avalon’s main dock with local guides who are on hand to explain everything you’re seeing from beginning to end.

When the sun begins to dip, head over to the Catalina Casino. Despite the name, there’s no gambling here—but you can take a tour of its stunning Art Deco interiors and learn about its glamorous Hollywood history. Afterward, explore Avalon’s quaint, walkable streets lined with boutiques, souvenir shops, and cozy eateries. Not up for walking? Hop in a golf cart tour to see see every inch of Avalon.

While Catalina makes for an excellent day trip, it’s even better when you stay overnight. Consider booking a room at Hotel Atwater or the cliffside Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel for a truly memorable escape.

So pack that sunscreen, toss a floppy hat into your weekend bag, and get ready to sip fruity drinks with tiny umbrellas. Catalina is your easy, breezy, California-style Caribbean getaway—no passport required.
