The word “pristine” is frequently tossed around to describe gorgeous beaches around the world. It’s usually fairly accurate, but there’s almost no coastal destination as pristine as Honopu Beach. Located on the Nā Pali Coast of Kauai, it’s remote, majestic, and a sacred site for Hawaiians. According to tour operator Nā Pali Riders, it was once used as a burial ground for chiefs.

Named to the “Best of the Best” beaches hall of fame by The World’s 50 Best Beaches, Honopu Beach is known for its waterfall, 1,200-foot cliffs, and two beautiful coves, separated by the 90-foot Honopu Arch. While striking and incredibly photo-worthy, this is not a tourist beach. In fact, it can only be reached by swimming—you must be a strong swimmer, and it’s generally not recommended. Boats of all types are not allowed to land on the beach, and the sea cliffs block access by land.

“The breathtaking Nā Pali Coast can be visited all year round, but we recommend going during the dry season, which is from April to November,” reads The World’s 50 Best Beaches editors’ comments. “If you plan on swimming to Honopu Beach from the neighboring beaches, it is only possible during the summer months, at low tide, and before the winds pick up. Alternatively, you can swim from a cruise boat with the help and guidance of the captain, but you must be an experienced ocean swimmer.”

Nā Pali Riders also notes there are large waves and strong riptides, and fins are recommended. Because of the dangerous condition of swimming to shore, The World’s 50 Best Beaches shares that it’s generally best to simply enjoy the beach from afar. This also ensures the sacred beach stays unspoiled. However, if you do make it to the beach, be sure to treat the land with respect, monitor the wind and current conditions, and leave no trace behind.

If you’re visiting Kauai and interested in booking a boat tour, you have a few options. Nā Pali Riders offers a raft and snorkel tour along the 17-mile Nā Pali Coast. It’s a four-hour-long adventure that gives you the chance to see some of the most stunning beaches as well as dolphins, sea turtles, and humpback whales—the latter of which are typically seen from December through April. Holo Holo Charters, Kauai Sea Tours, and Capt Andy’s also bring guests out on the water, allowing them to snorkel, spot wildlife, and sightsee.
